The ragtag group of bounty hunters go from target to target, while trying to outrun their past. Shakir also stars as Spike’s trusted co-pilot Jet Black and Pineda as the highly-skilled bounty hunter Faye Valentine. With shots of Spike’s Swordfish, new planets, stylish combat scenes and snarky one-liners, Netflix has fully immersed itself into the beloved world of Cowboy Bebop.īased on Shinichirō Watanabe’s cult anime series, Cowboy Bebop follows a group of misfit bounty hunters, led by Cho’s Spike Spiegel as they search for the galaxy’s most valuable criminals. “What the actual f**k,” Spike whispers to Jet. Spike giving spare change to some random kid, again, looking glum. Spike chain-smoking on a bench in the middle of nowhere, looking up at the sky. The stylized trailer gives viewers a glimpse at reimagined foes –the Teddy Bomber, smuggler Katerina Solensan and experiment-gone-wrong Pierrot le Fou. Did Spike suffer from depression Because of the many clips shown during the credits of each episode: -Spike looking at a well-lit street at night showing no signs of happiness. Of course, Daniella Pineda’s Faye Valentine enters the scene, looking for her own cut in the bounty business. After thinking about his future in the Syndicate, Spike made a decision: he was going to protect his brother by murdering the entire rival cartel and would leave the Syndicate, taking Julia with him.“In this solar system, if the cops or the bounty hunters don’t get you, the syndicate will,” Spike says, teasing the series’ big bad and his past with the crime organization. Spike confessed to Julia that he had loved her from the moment both he and Vicious saw her perform at Ana's nightclub that one night, but Vicious got to her first. To further complicate matters, Spike was in love with Vicious' girlfriend Julia, whom he slept with on the night Vicious brutally murdered the rival cartel member. Even Vicious' own father thought he was too reckless to take over the family business, which Vicious himself unwittingly proved when he angered a rival cartel by murdering one of its members.įollowing the rival cartel incident, Spike was ordered to murder his own brother by the Syndicate, or someone else would be tasked with doing it. While there was no animosity between Spike and Vicious in adulthood, it was clear that within the Syndicate, Spike was the favorite son as he was the calmer of the two men. This made Spike feel forever indebted to Vicious and always worked alongside him. They both bonded as children and thought of each other as brothers. Vicious met Spike when the latter was an orphan and asked his father to take him in, naming him Fearless. The live-action series also establishes that their falling out was a bit more complicated than a mere case of one man sleeping with the other man's girlfriend. Not only does the new series establish how both men first met, but also how they both met and fell in love with Julia. These same story beats from the anime are present in the live-action adaptation by Netflix, with the difference that the new series devotes an entire episode to fleshing out the history between Spike and Vicious. That all changed, of course, when they both fell in love with a woman named Julia and had a falling out as a result. As Mao's favorite sons, Spike and Vicious had a fraternal relationship with one another and had each other's backs. ![]() For example, his not seeming to care about anything, while seeming cool, is likely a result of him feeling dead inside from all. Of course, such a level of cool requires certain sacrifices. Originally, both men were members of the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate and had father-and-son-style relationships with crime boss Mao Yenrai, who is male in the anime. The hair, the suit, the attitude, and the fact that he's a bounty hunter in space all make Spike Spiegel a pretty cool guy. Cowboy Bebop protagonist Spike Spiegel has a complicated relationship with the series antagonist, Vicious, in the anime.
